If you have started your journey with braces, your orthodontist discussed the importance of good oral hygiene during your treatment. Brushing twice a day isn’t enough to keep your mouth healthy. It’s also common to run into a few minor issues when first starting treatment, but don’t worry. Here are a few must-have items for your braces survival kit.
Toothbrush and Toothpaste
Having braces means that food is more likely to become trapped and linger in your mouth, increasing your risk of cavities and gum disease. Your orthodontist will recommend brushing your teeth in the morning, at night, and after eating. This means you’ll have to brush even when you’re not at home. Purchase a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste to carry with you to make it easy to brush and floss when you’re on the go.
Floss & Floss Threader
Even the best, most thorough brushing won’t be enough to keep your smile cavity-free, however. To make sure you’re not stuck with any uncomfortable or embarrassing bits of food between your braces, make sure your kit includes dental floss. Additionally, you should also have a floss threader, which will help you guide the floss between your teeth and braces to clean out those hard-to-reach places.
Over-the-Counter Pain Reliever
You may experience some temporary tenderness, especially after having your braces adjusted. Carry over-the-counter pain relievers with you to manage your discomfort. Don’t forget to eat soft foods until your pain subsides.
Orthodontic Wax
Brackets and wires can irritate the insides of your lips or cheeks. Applying orthodontic wax will cover the area to reduce friction and soreness.
Lip Balm
Your lips may become chapped more frequently when wearing braces. Lip balm is a must-have item for your survival kit. It will prevent chapped and cracked lips.
Small Compact Mirror
A small mirror may come in handy if you need to look in your mouth to assess an issue.
Extra Rubber Bands
If your orthodontist has instructed you to wear rubber bands, include extras in your braces kit. Orthodontic rubber bands are very small, and they can be easy to lose or break on a regular basis. However, the more you wear your rubber bands, the quicker you’ll reach the end of your treatment. So be sure to keep some extras on hand.
Water
Proper hydration is important for a healthy mouth and body. In addition to staying hydrated, water is great to have on hand to rinse your mouth in case you can’t get to your toothbrush.
Keeping your mouth clean and healthy will ensure your treatment plan stays on track. Don’t forget to maintain your regular adjustment appointments to reach your goals on time.
