Metal braces on dental moldStraight teeth are important for more than a beautiful smile. The positions of teeth affect oral health and functions. Bite and alignment issues can even influence confidence. Thankfully, many orthodontic treatments are available to fix bad bites and misaligned teeth. Whether you or your child needs braces, here are 5 questions to ask during your orthodontic consultation.

1. How Long Will Treatment Take?

There’s no one-size-fits-all timeframe for braces because every mouth is as unique as fingerprints. On average, most patients require clear aligners or metal braces for 12 to 24 months. However, many factors affect the timeline, like the complexity of tooth movements needed.

Age can also play a role because children are still growing and developing, so their teeth move quicker than adults. You can avoid timely delays by following your orthodontist’s instructions.

2. What Orthodontic Treatments Do You Offer?

There are multiple options to fix common bite and alignment concerns. After an examination and diagnostic imaging, your orthodontist will recommend a treatment, like:

  • Traditional Braces: A series of brackets and wires are used to slowly pull teeth into alignment. It’s a tried-and-proven method of fixing the most complex alignment issues.
  • Invisalign: As an alternative to metal braces, clear aligners are worn over the teeth to gradually move them. This provides a discreet solution without restrictions.

3. Does Getting Braces Hurt?

No orthodontic treatment is completely pain-free. It’s normal to experience tenderness when first getting braces, after adjustments, or changing to new aligners. This is a sign the treatment is working because the pressure is moving the teeth.

Any discomfort can be managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever and eating soft foods. It will subside within a few days and will be less frequent as the teeth move into alignment.

4. How Much Do Braces Cost?

There isn’t a flat fee for braces because every situation differs. Many things affect the amount you will pay, like the type of treatment, any preliminary procedures, and your dental insurance.

5. Can I Use My Dental Insurance for Braces?

Dental insurance that covers orthodontics can help reduce the amount you will pay after meeting your deductible. Your insurance will pay a flat amount for treatment, which typically ranges from $500 to $2,000. Many orthodontists offer flexible payment options for any remaining balance to keep a straight smile within everyone’s budget.

Don’t hesitate to ask your orthodontist any questions about the road ahead. They’ll provide you with the information you need to make educated oral health decisions.
