Whether you or your child are benefiting from braces, you can lessen the risk of an orthodontic emergency by following a few tips.

What is an Orthodontic Emergency?

Various issues are considered an orthodontic emergency, such as a broken bracket or wire. However, irritation or injury of the gums or soft tissues from damage or trauma can also be an orthodontic emergency. Besides discomfort, you can be at risk of sores, continued irritation, and infections with no treatment.

Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies

You can’t always stop accidents from happening, but there are many things you can do to lessen the risk of orthodontic emergencies, including:

Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods: Hard and sticky foods can break arch wires or cause brackets to pop off. It is best to follow your orthodontist’s dietary instructions, like avoiding popcorn, chips, caramel, and nuts.

Use Dental Wax: If there’s any irritation to the insides of the cheeks or lips, apply dental wax to reduce friction to prevent sores.

Wear an Athletic Mouthguard: An athletic mouthguard will provide a protective barrier to lessen the risk of dental emergencies. Researchers have also found that athletic mouthguards can reduce the severity of concussions.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Commit to good oral hygiene to prevent cavities and gum disease. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss every day. Don’t forget to visit your dentist every 6 months for cleaning and checkup.

Managing Orthodontic Emergencies

If you or a loved one suffer an orthodontic emergency, don’t panic! Contact your orthodontist. If there is an archwire protruding into the soft tissues, use fingernail clippers or small scissors to snip the end off if you can’t get into your orthodontist right away. Apply wax to cover metal areas that can irritate soft tissues. An over-the-counter pain reliever can help manage any discomfort.

Your orthodontist will get you into your office quickly to assess the situation and provide the solution needed to keep your treatment on track.

About Dr. Adi Davidyan

Dr. Davidyan achieved his dental degree from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and has continued his education in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
